Wally Welch 1941 Ford
Wally Welch 1941 Ford
Wally Welch had his 1941 Ford convertible reworked by the Ayala brothers. Overall the modifications where conservative, but the end result is a very stylish- late 40’s styled custom.
The windshield was mildly chopped and Louis Chavez ‘s American Auto Top made the padded removable top. The Carson Top shop might have been the inventor of this style of Padded top, but other upholstery shops like Chavez, Gaylord, Hall and possibly a few others soon made there own versions of this then very popular customizing treatment. The front of a 1942 Ford was grafted on and 1948 Ford gravel pans where molded and faired into the front and rear. The same year bumpers where also used. The 1942 Ford grille shell was removed and a new opening was scratch built and molded to the fenders. The section above the grille was built up from sheet metal. The hood was de-chromed and the bottom edge of the front cut of and molded to the front fenders. The beltline side trim was shortened on the hood to add more weight to the rear of the body so visualizing a more speed boat look. The fender side trim is modified 41 Ford. The headlights where slightly extended and frenched into the fenders which where molded to the body. At the rear custom made taillight pods where molded to the rear fenders which had just like the front fenders been molded to the body.Stock 46-48 Ford taillights with the chrome bezel where used. The remainder of the chrome element on the body where shaved for an uninterrupted smooth look.
Custom was lowered with dropped front axle and lowering blocks an kicked up frame at the rear. Factory accessory fender skirts a set of single bar flippers mounted on wide whites and a set of 112-Aplleton spotlights where used. The custom was painted Devil-red metallic lacquer. The Welch Ford is at first glance very similar to the D.Holland 41 Ford custom, but in many details so much different.
