Ray Vega  1938 Ford Pheaton

 

Ray Vega of Burbank went to the Valley Custom shop with his rare 1938 Ford four-door sedan to have them create this timeless gorgeous custom. The body was first channeled 5 inches over the frame to get the perfect ride height but still have perfect handling. A 1940 Ford Deluxe front end was used to replace the 38 Ford, this changed the look of the car completely. However this was not just a bolt on modification.


The 1940 Ford front fenders where raised 5 inches compared to the stock position. A 1940 cowl sectioned 5 inches and a 1940 hood was sectioned 5 inches and the factory belt line crease was removed completely, for a very smooth. The hood was also made into one peace and at the center a gentle very stylish peak was created. This peak flows very nicely into the 40 Ford grille center. Stock 1940 headlights where retained and at the back a set of 1941 Studebaker rocket shaped taillights where used on smoothed rear fenders.

The fenders are not molded to the body but have very elegant chrome beading used inside the leading edge. 1947 Ford bumpers and bumper guards where used and  where raised 5 inches compared to the body giving the appearance the car is much higher of the ground than it actually is. The windshield was chopped three inches and the Carson Top Shop created the padded top. Smooth aftermarket hubcaps where used frequently by Valley Customs and in combination with wide white walls they are the perfect choice for this custom.

The finished body was painted a deep Royal Maroon after all external handles where removed. The interior on this Valley Custom is really spectacular. Since the cowl of a 40 Ford was used it was a natural to use the 1940 dash and steering column as well. The dash was painted body color. With a black steering wheel.

Ray’s Mother hand tooled several portions of the natural brown leather with flower motives and L & L Upholstery of Glendale did the actual upholstery job in wide rolls and pleates. In some of the photo’s it can be seen that there was also a canvas tarp to cover the rear bench.
