Glad Ellis  1949 Mercury

Glad Ellis worked at General Motors when he decided he wanted something special done with his brand new 1949 Mercury convertible. He loved the shape of the Oldsmobile, Chevrolet and Cadillac Hard-Top models, so he decided that was what he wanted to do with hit convertible.

The Valley Custom shop was given the convertible and a brand new Cadillac De Ville Hard-Top roof with the question to make it work.

The rear deck from the 1949 Mercury was to short for the new roof so it had to be extended
14 inches. Also the top needed to sit a bit lower that it would have been on the original Cadillac resulting that the stock rear window could not be used. A hand formed Lucite three piece window was eventually made to fit the new opening.

The windshield top bow of the Mercury needed to be reshaped to fit the new Cadillac top.

Other customizing to the car where to remove all chrome from the trunk and hood and removal of the door handles. The grille surround was chrome plated.
