Buddy Ohanesian  1940 Mercury

Buddy Ohanesian is one of the best looking customs of all time, and it is a 4-door model!

The very streamlined new all steel removable top creates a wonderful rearward flow. All the elements that where modified on this custom where modyfied with a purpose, not for the sake of wanting something to change.

Harry Westergard started this project, he reshaped the front to accept a 1946 Chevy Grille and chopped the windshield. Bertolucci did the rest of the modifications including the molded in fenders, removal of all exterior chrome and ofcoars the wonderful removable hard-top.

The car first ran a padded style top, but so far I have not been able to find any photos of this version.

Bertolucci created the top from an Chrysler 4-door unit, and it must have been an increadible task to mate it to the reworked rear of the Mercury body. The fit and finish of the top is flawless, even after all these years it still fits perfectly. The taillights where first small motorcycle lights, but where later replaced with 1946 Ford units on custom made pods molded to the rear fenders. The headlights where first painted body color and later molded to the front fenders.

The car uses 1946 Chevy bumpers both front and rear, and at the rear the exhaust tips excit thru the bumper.

The car was extremely low, but that did not keep Ohanesian from driving it... a lot. He also used it to tow his Lake racer to several dry lake races.

A 1947 Cadillac dashboard was modified to fit the mercury interior. and Bertolucci painted the streamlined 1940 Mercury 4-door in his trademark Bertolucci Maroon.

in 2007 the car is owned and restored by Ed Hegarty.
